Behind the Beadwork

Founded in 2020 by Cree-Métis artist Stephanie Chambers, Beading Medicine is a blend of traditional and contemporary Métis beadwork, art, and design put forth with the intention of preserving Indigenous artistry of the past and celebrating its future.

Beading Medicine is committed to good stewardship of the earth and our ancestral lands, as well as the lands of our relations, and as such we deeply focus on sustainable materials as well as local and Indigenous sourcing.

Born and raised in Moh’kins’tis (Calgary, AB) Stephanie is of Cree, Cree-Métis (family name ‘Klyne’), Norwegian and Polish blood, and elements of her diverse lineage can be seen throughout her work.

Stephanie has a background in illustration, design, and fine arts as well as Japanese fine dining. In 2018 she left her culinary career to focus on raising her child and putting her energy into connecting more deeply with her own culture and community and bringing her child up with Métis culture and values.

Stephanie believes that the dignity, perennial beauty, and good medicine of Indigenous art is a healing gift that should be shared with kin and ally alike.

Beading Medicine plans to offer both Indigenous and non-Indigenous beadwork workshops in the near future. If you would like to be notified when these classes are available we encourage you to sign up for our email newsletter.
